If your plan is to spend every waking hour inside the park and treat the hotel as a place to crash, this is the practical choice.

Technically you can walk to the park gate in about 15 minutes, mostly uphill. Nobody actually recommends that route. Instead, walk the 3 minutes to the Universal City Metro station and catch Universal free shuttle up to the entrance — it is faster and you skip the incline entirely.
