Flight of the Hippogriff
About this ride
Flight of the Hippogriff is the only outdoor roller coaster at Universal Studios Hollywood, and it sits directly inside Hogsmeade, making it the most visible ride in the Wizarding World. It's themed around Hagrid's Care of Magical Creatures class, with a Buckbeak figure at the top of the lift hill and a clear view of Hogwarts castle on the descent. The ride runs fast and efficiently, making it one of the better throughput attractions in the park on crowded days.
Best time to ride
This coaster loads quickly and the line rarely exceeds 35 minutes even on busy days. Mid-morning is ideal — it's outdoor and fully exposed to the sun, so it becomes uncomfortable to wait on hot afternoons. First ride of the day gives you the best views before the Wizarding World crowds arrive.
Insider tips
- Sit in the back row for the best airtime pop on the final helix — the front is smoother and the back has noticeably more kick.
- The line for this coaster moves faster than it looks from the entrance — a posted 30-minute wait often delivers a 20-minute actual experience.
- Look left on the first descent for a clear sightline toward Hogwarts castle — it's one of the better photo moments in the park even if you can't capture it yourself.
- This ride is a good warm-up coaster if your group hasn't ridden in a while — the forces are real but not punishing.
- The single rider queue is not available here, but the standby line rarely justifies Express Pass.
What to know before you ride
- Fully exposed outdoor coaster — can be uncomfortably hot in direct summer sun.
- Short ride time — under 90 seconds total from launch to brake run.
- Minimum height: 39 in / 99 cm.
- Not a children's ride — the snap on the helix is real.
- Can close due to lightning or high winds.

Sarah's Take
“Flight of the Hippogriff punches above its weight class. It's short, yes — barely 90 seconds — but the helix at the end has genuine lateral G-forces and the setting inside Hogsmeade is beautiful. It's not a must-ride for coaster veterans, but it's a solid 'worth it' and the line moves fast enough that it rarely costs you much time.”

View all →The queue through Hogwarts castle is worth the wait even if you never got on the ride. But you should get on the ride. Just know going in that this is one of the more motion-sickness-prone attractions in any theme park — not because it spins but because it combines physical movement with fast-moving screens in a way that can scramble your head if you're at all susceptible.

Transformers: The Ride-3D does exactly what it says it does — it throws you into a 3D battle sequence with the Autobots and the screen work is excellent. My honest issue is that it's essentially the same ride system as Forbidden Journey with a different IP, and the motion sickness risk is real. If you've already done Forbidden Journey and you're feeling fine, do this one. If your stomach was unhappy on Journey, skip it.

Revenge of the Mummy is better than anything at Disneyland. I said what I said. It's a launched indoor coaster that goes from 0 to 45 mph in the dark and most people walk past it because it looks old from the outside. Those people are wrong and I feel sorry for them.
