Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge
About this ride
Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge is the anchor attraction of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood, and it uses augmented reality headsets to overlay the Mario Kart racing world onto a series of elaborately themed physical sets. Guests collect coins and hit shells to score points against Bowser's team, with results tracked and displayed at the end of the race. It's the most sophisticated use of AR in any theme park ride to date, and the physical environments — particularly the Rainbow Road sequence — are stunning.
Best time to ride
This ride has the longest average wait in the park on busy days. Rope drop is critical — be inside Super Nintendo World before 9:15 a.m. if the park opens at 9. Alternatively, save your Express Pass for this ride if you're visiting on a weekend between April and September. Single rider is not available.
Insider tips
- Focus your shell throws on red shells for maximum points — they home in on targets and are significantly more valuable than green shells.
- Look up during the Rainbow Road sequence — the ceiling detail is extraordinary and most guests miss it while staring at the AR overlay.
- The Power Up Bands sold at Super Nintendo World sync with the ride to add bonus interactions in the queue — they are a genuine upgrade if you plan to spend time in the land.
- The ride scores are tracked and displayed at the end — if you're competitive, designate a driver (who steers) and a shooter (who focuses exclusively on targets).
- The AR headsets are sanitized between rides but still give some guests pause — antimicrobial lens wipes are available at the boarding area on request.
- If you experience any headset disorientation, flip the headset up — the physical sets are detailed enough to enjoy the ride without AR.
What to know before you ride
- AR headset required for the full experience — wearing glasses may affect headset fit.
- Mild motion disorientation possible from the AR combined with vehicle movement.
- Minimum height: 40 in / 102 cm.
- Children under 7 may find the headset uncomfortable or confusing.
- Power Up Bands enhance the experience but are sold separately — not required to ride.
Motion Sickness Warning — Mild Risk
The AR headset combined with the moving ride vehicle causes mild disorientation for some guests. If you experience issues with VR or AR headsets, consider riding without using the headset — the physical sets are still impressive on their own.

Sarah's Take
“I came into Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge skeptical — I am not someone who needs another AR screen ride in my life. I was wrong. The combination of the physical sets and the AR overlay is executed at a level I haven't seen anywhere else, and the competitive scoring mechanic means the ride has genuine replay value. The wait times are brutal, but this is one of the few cases at USH where I'd say it's worth it regardless.”

More family-friendly rides at Universal Studios Hollywood
View all →The Studio Tour is unlike anything else at Universal Studios Hollywood and it's not something you can replicate anywhere else in the world. You are riding through an actual working movie studio. The King Kong 360 3D sequence is legitimately spectacular and Jaws lake still runs. Give it the 60 minutes it asks for — this is a must-do, not just a filler.

Despicable Me Minion Mayhem is the right choice for families with kids who aren't yet tall enough for the bigger rides. The theming is genuinely charming and the Minion dance party at the end is the kind of thing young kids will talk about for weeks. Adults with motion sensitivity should sit this one out — it is gentler than Simpsons but not gentle.

The Simpsons Ride has the best writing of any ride in the park — the queue videos alone are funnier than most actual comedy attractions. The bad news: it is also one of the most effective motion sickness machines in any park, anywhere. The dome screen combined with the aggressive simulator motion is relentless. Know what you're signing up for.
