About this ride

The ride begins with an original Mickey Mouse cartoon short playing on a screen — then the screen peels away and you're transported inside the cartoon. The 2.5D technology uses flat painted sets combined with dimensional objects, projection mapping, and practical effects. The trackless vehicles mean each ride-through can follow a slightly different path.

Best time to ride

Multi Pass or rope drop — it's the most popular ride in the newly expanded Toontown and lines build fast.

Insider tips

  • Look at the posters and props in the queue — filled with visual puns and cartoon gags.
  • The 2.5D effect is most striking in the opening scene where you pass through the movie screen.
  • Ride it more than once to catch all the gags.
  • The Mickey's Toontown area was fully redesigned in 2023 — worth exploring the whole land after riding.

Mateo's Take

Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway is the best thing to happen to Mickey's Toontown in the attraction's history, and I think it is genuinely underappreciated in a park full of bigger headline rides. The 2.5D technology, where flat painted cartoon environments combine with dimensional objects and projection mapping, is not a gimmick. It is a genuinely new way of doing a dark ride that you have not experienced anywhere else. The scene where your vehicle rolls through the movie screen and enters the cartoon world is one of the most surprising transitions in any Disney attraction. The ride is loaded with visual gags and character humor throughout, and repeat rides consistently reveal jokes and details you missed on previous visits. My recommendation: treat this as a high-priority morning ride and don't let the Toontown location make you underestimate it. The queue area alone is worth 15 minutes of careful exploration.
