About this ride

Ride vehicles move through colorful scenes in classic Fantasyland flat-painted backdrop style. The Pleasure Island sequence — where boys start transforming into donkeys — is surprisingly effective. The Monstro the whale sequence has a genuinely impressive whale figure that still holds up.

Best time to ride

Low wait any time of day — rarely exceeds 20 minutes. Good as a casual walk-on filler.

Insider tips

  • The Pleasure Island/donkey transformation scene can be alarming for young children.
  • This is the last major Fantasyland dark ride built in the original style — a piece of park history.

Mateo's Take

Pinocchio's Daring Journey is the most overlooked dark ride in Fantasyland, and I want to change that. Opened in 1983, it is the last major attraction at Disneyland built in the traditional Fantasyland dark ride style, flat-painted backdrops, practical figure animation, classic Disney storytelling, and it is genuinely good at what it does. The Pleasure Island sequence, where Pinocchio's friends begin transforming into donkeys, is more effective than most guests expect. The Monstro the whale finale still has genuine scale. This is not a ride you Multi Pass or rush to at rope drop. It is a ride you walk into when the wait is under 15 minutes, slow down, and appreciate as a piece of living Disney history. Most guests walk straight past it because there is nothing flashy about the entrance. That is exactly why the wait is almost always short and why you should use that opportunity every single time you're in Fantasyland.
