About this ride

The island features caves, rope bridges, Fort Wilderness, and winding trails. Kids who are tired of standing in lines suddenly transform here — the freedom to run, explore, and climb at their own pace is genuinely therapeutic. Almost no guests go here, leaving it remarkably uncrowded.

Best time to ride

Mid-morning to early afternoon with kids who need to burn energy. Allow at least 30 minutes to really explore.

Insider tips

  • Fort Wilderness has genuinely dark cave sections — prep toddlers and young kids before entering.
  • Almost no guests go here — one of the least crowded experiences in the entire park.
  • Walt Disney personally designed the island's layout and considered it one of his favorite projects.

What to know before you ride

  • The cave sections are genuinely dark and slightly tight.
  • The suspension bridge may concern guests with height sensitivity.
  • Toddlers need close supervision due to uneven terrain.

Mateo's Take

Tom Sawyer Island is the single most underrated experience at Disneyland, and I will make that argument to anyone. There is no queue. There is no ride vehicle. There is no Lightning Lane. There is just a raft that takes you to a mid-river island where your children can run free through caves, across rope bridges, over rocks, and through Fort Wilderness for as long as they want. The island was personally designed by Walt Disney, who considered it one of his favorite projects at the park, and the care he put into it is evident in every path choice and every discovery you find as you explore. No other experience in the park gives children the freedom that Tom Sawyer Island does. I have watched exhausted Disneyland kids transform completely the moment they have unstructured space to move. Mid-morning is the sweet spot. Plan at least 30 minutes, ideally 45. This is the hidden recharge of a Disneyland day.
