About This Ride

WaterWorld is USH's live stunt show, based on the 1995 film, and it's been running at this park since the film came out — that's three decades of jet skis, fire, and a full-scale seaplane crash landing in front of a live audience, twice a day, with zero digital effects standing in for the real thing. The setup: Helen returns to the Atoll with word she's found Dryland, but the Smokers — an aquatic raider crew — are on her tail, and what follows is roughly 16 minutes of stunt work, pyrotechnics, and a genuinely massive water explosion when the seaplane goes down. This show won a THEA Award back in 1996 and it's held up. It runs in an outdoor arena that seats around 2,000 guests near Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, with no height requirement, which makes it one of the easiest wins in the whole park for a group with mixed ages and mixed thrill tolerance.

Best Time to Ride

Check showtimes in the Universal Studios Hollywood app as soon as you're through the gates — the schedule changes daily and isn't fixed. Arrive at the arena about 20 minutes before the listed showtime to get a decent seat; that listed time is when the show starts, not when doors open. This is also a smart move strategically: when Mario Kart or Harry Potter queues are running 60+ minutes, ducking into a WaterWorld showtime is a better use of that window than standing in line.

I don't care how thrill-focused your itinerary is — build fifteen minutes into your day for this one.
