About this ride
Dumbo the Flying Elephant is a classic Disneyland attraction that has been part of Fantasyland since the park's opening in 1955. Each Dumbo car seats two riders and circles the center hub while riders control their altitude with a joystick lever — flying high gives a beautiful aerial view over Fantasyland, while lower positions allow riders to observe the ground-level scenery closely. Flying at maximum height on a clear day reveals the entire Fantasyland landscape from above in a way that no other ground-level attraction can match. The joy on young children's faces when they realize they control Dumbo's altitude is immediate and genuine. The ride has no height requirement and is suitable for all ages. As one of the most recognizable attractions at Disneyland, Dumbo consistently draws long queues throughout the day. There is no Lightning Lane option for Dumbo, making arrival timing the only tool for managing wait times.
Best time to ride
First thing in the morning at rope drop with young children. The line gets long fast and there is no Lightning Lane option.
Insider tips
- Go at rope drop — the Dumbo line hits 30–45 minutes by 9:30 AM on most days.
- Fly as high as possible for the best views of Fantasyland.
- For the best photo, position yourself across the walkway and shoot from ground level looking up.
Good for
Mateo's Take
Dumbo the Flying Elephant is a ride that exists almost entirely for the benefit of children under five, and within that specific context it might be the most emotionally effective experience in the entire park. The moment a small child realizes they can control their Dumbo's altitude, flying up or dropping down over Fantasyland with a view of the whole world below them, their face tells you everything about why Walt Disney built Disneyland. The problem is that every other family in the park understands this too, which means the queue reaches 30 to 45 minutes by 9:30 AM on any normal day. My strategy: Dumbo is a rope drop priority if you have a toddler. Get there before 9 AM and the wait is minimal. Get there at 10:30 AM and you have used a significant chunk of your morning for a 90-second flight. There is no Lightning Lane for Dumbo, so timing is your only tool. Rope drop. Don't negotiate with yourself on this.

Pirates of the Caribbean is the original Disney dark ride masterpiece — the one that set the template for everything that followed. Walt Disney himself oversaw its creation, and it opened in 1967 as the last attraction he personally supervised. You drift through moonlit bayous and into a chaotic port town under siege by buccaneers.

Jungle Cruise is Disneyland's original opening-day comedy boat ride — a live skipper-led river tour past animatronic wildlife where the puns are the point. No height requirement, no Lightning Lane, and one of the best morning rides in Adventureland when paired with Indiana Jones.
