Introduction
I grew up in Anaheim, which means Disneyland was never just a vacation — it was a Tuesday. In my opinion, the difference between a good Disneyland day and a great one comes down to what you know before you arrive.
This guide collects the tips I would hand every first-timer. If you want the broader step-by-step version, start with our First-Timer's Guide to Disneyland. Where a tip depends on a Disney rule, price or date, I cite the Disney page and the date I read it. Everything else is my opinion and is marked that way.
Indiana Jones closure notice: Per our rides table, Indiana Jones Adventure is listed as closed for refurbishment as of September 8, 2026, with no confirmed reopening date. I've left every Indy step in this guide as written so the plan works if it reopens — wherever a step depends on it, the "While Indy is closed" line right below it tells you what to do instead. Check the Disneyland app before your visit.
Part 1 — Before You Leave Home
Should You Set Up the Disneyland App Before You Arrive?
Yes. In my opinion, set up the Disneyland app the night before rather than while standing in the park. Download it, create your Disney account, link the tickets in your party under one account, and add a payment method.
Mateo's Take: In my opinion, have one adult hold all the tickets and manage Multi Pass for the group. It avoids several people trying to book separately.
Buy Your Tickets
Compare Disneyland ticket prices through Undercover Tourist before you buy. In my opinion, avoid resellers you cannot verify.
When Should You Book Dining Reservations?
Disney's Blue Bayou Restaurant page (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/dining/disneyland/blue-bayou-restaurant/, read October 9, 2026) says reservations can be made "up to 60 days prior to your visit." That wording comes from that restaurant's page, so check each restaurant's own page for its booking window. In my opinion, book your most important table first and everything else second.
Part 2 — Arrival and Entry Strategy
Should You Arrive by Park Opening?
Per Disney's parking page (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/guest-services/parking/, read October 9, 2026), theme park parking locations open 60 minutes before the earliest standard theme park opening time, and Disney advises planning to arrive at park opening time.
Mateo's Take: In my opinion, being parked and through security before opening puts you in position to move the moment the park opens. On a moderate crowd day, that early start can matter more than buying Multi Pass.
Which Way Should You Go at Rope Drop?
In my opinion, go left into Adventureland. Many guests reaching the Hub turn toward Tomorrowland or Fantasyland, and Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean and Indiana Jones Adventure are all in the Adventureland direction.
Mateo's Take: In my opinion, hard left to Adventureland is the best rope drop default unless Galaxy's Edge is your priority.
While Indy is closed: still go left — ride Jungle Cruise on standby instead.
Where Should You Park?
Per Disney's parking page (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/guest-services/parking/, read October 9, 2026), a car or motorcycle is $40 at the Mickey & Friends, Pixar Pals and Toy Story parking areas, and preferred parking is $60. Disney says fees are subject to change without notice. In my opinion, it is also worth comparing the Harbor Boulevard hotel lots; check each lot's current rate and walking distance before you go.
What Happens at Security?
Per Disney's Park Rules and Regulations page (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/park-rules/, read October 9, 2026), all persons, bags, parcels, clothing and other items may be subject to screening or security checks. In my opinion, use the wait to settle your Multi Pass plan and dining times in the app.
Are There Bag Size Limits?
Yes. Per Disney's Park Rules and Regulations page (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/park-rules/, read October 9, 2026), suitcases, bags, coolers or backpacks larger than 24" long x 15" wide x 18" high are not allowed in any theme park.
What Are the Stroller and Wagon Rules?
Per Disney's Park Rules and Regulations page (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/park-rules/, read October 9, 2026), strollers greater than 31" (79 cm) in width and 52" (132 cm) in length are prohibited, and so are wagons, including stroller wagons. In my opinion, measure your stroller before you travel.
Part 3 — Multi Pass Strategy
How Much Does Multi Pass Cost?
Multi Pass is $35 per ticket per day, per Disney's Lightning Lane page (read October 9, 2026). Prices and availability vary by date. See our Disneyland Lightning Lane Complete Guide for how to use it. Check the Disneyland app for current prices.
Mateo's Take: In my opinion, decide your top rides before you arrive and book those first.
How Does Multi Pass Booking Work?
Per Disney's Lightning Lane page (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/lightning-lane-passes/, read October 9, 2026), you make your first Multi Pass selection after you enter a theme park, using the Disneyland app. Selections are made one at a time, and you can book your next one after you redeem your selection or after 2 hours have passed. Disney's page does not state a maximum number of selections.
Which Rides Have Single Pass?
Per Disney's Lightning Lane page (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/lightning-lane-passes/, read October 9, 2026), Single Pass is offered for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland Park and Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure. You can buy up to one per attraction per day, subject to availability, and prices vary by date and attraction. Check the Disneyland app for current prices.
Is Multi Pass Worth It for a Three-Day Visit?
In my opinion, usually not. Multi Pass is close to essential on a one-day trip, but with three days and a solid rope drop plan I would spend that budget elsewhere. If two days is more your speed, our Disneyland Two Day Itinerary shows how to split priority rides across both days.
Part 4 — Crowd Flow and Timing
When Should You Eat Lunch and Dinner?
In my opinion, eat lunch at 11am and dinner at 5:30pm. Eating before the usual meal rushes means less waiting for a table.
Mateo's Take: In my opinion, moving lunch to 11am is the easiest scheduling change you can make.
Should You Use Mobile Order?
In my opinion, yes, where it is offered. Ordering through the Disneyland app can let you skip the counter line at quick-service restaurants. Check the app for which locations accept mobile orders.
Should You Take an Afternoon Break?
In my opinion, yes, especially with children. A break in the shade between 2pm and 3pm can help everyone enjoy the evening.
Are Space Mountain and Haunted Mansion Better After Dark?
In my opinion, yes. Space Mountain and Haunted Mansion feel different after dark. Check the Disneyland app for current waits.
Should You Stay Until Park Close?
In my opinion, yes, at least once. The lights on Main Street and the view back toward the castle as the park winds down are worth seeing. For more, see our Best Photo Spots at Disneyland guide.
Part 5 — Budget Tips
Can You Refill a Water Bottle at Disneyland?
Per Disney's Bottle-Filling Stations page (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/guest-services/bottle-filling-stations/, read October 9, 2026), guests can refill their personal water bottles at bottle-filling stations at select locations at both parks. In my opinion, bring a refillable water bottle.
Can You Bring Your Own Food?
Check Disney's food and drink policy before packing food.
Per Disney's Park Rules and Regulations page (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/park-rules/, read October 9, 2026), loose or dry ice is not permitted in suitcases, bags, coolers or backpacks, and re-usable ice packs are recommended.
Where Do You Find Current Ticket Offers?
Check Disney's Offers & Discounts page for current offers before purchasing tickets. If you are visiting often enough that ticket costs are adding up, our Disneyland Magic Key Guide breaks down whether an annual pass beats paying per visit.
Is the Animation Academy Worth Your Time?
This tip is for days you visit Disney California Adventure. The Animation Academy is a drawing class where a Disney artist teaches you to draw a character step by step. Per Disney's Animation Academy page (read October 9, 2026), it is open to any height and classes occur every 30 minutes. In my opinion, it is a good way to take a break on a hot afternoon, and one of the most underrated attractions at the Disneyland Resort.
Part 6 — Details Worth Knowing
For more details most guests walk past, see our Disneyland Hidden Secrets guide.
Look for the Lamp in Walt's Apartment Window
Look at the second floor of the Fire Station building on the left side of Main Street near the entrance. The apartment Walt Disney used during park visits is up there, and a lamp sits in its window.
In my opinion, it is one of the quietest details on Main Street.
What Can City Hall Help With?
Per Disney's Information Centers & Guest Relations page (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/guest-services/info-center-guest-relations/, read October 9, 2026), Guest Relations at City Hall on Main Street, U.S.A. lists attraction translation devices, accessibility information, times guides, up-to-the-minute park news, help with dining, hotel and ticket upgrade reservations, foreign currency exchange, lost guest retrieval and general assistance. Disney lists these for its Guest Relations locations generally, so check with a Cast Member for what a specific location offers.
Part 7 — Tips for Specific Guest Types
Tips for Families with Young Kids
Per Disney's Rider Switch Service page (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/guest-services/rider-switch/, read October 9, 2026), your whole group tells a Cast Member at the attraction entrance. One party waits outside the queue while the other rides. When the first party returns, the waiting guests (a maximum of two riding next) board without waiting in the standard queue. Disney lists Rider Switch as available at most attractions. In my opinion, it suits height-restricted attractions well.
In my opinion, Fantasyland at rope drop is a strong choice for families with young children, with Dumbo, it's a small world and the Fantasyland dark rides all nearby. Getting there early can make the rest of the morning easier.
Mateo's Take: In my opinion, Rider Switch is the most underused option for families with a little one who cannot ride. Ask about it at the attraction entrance.
Tips for Adults and Couples
In my opinion, New Orleans Square after dark is the most beautiful part of Disneyland, and it is worth building an evening around. The Mint Julep Bar is, in my opinion, one of the more romantic stops in the park.
Tips for Groups
In my opinion, designate one person to manage all Multi Pass bookings for the group, with all tickets linked to one account. Decide your ride split before you enter the park, not while standing in front of an attraction.
How Does Park Hopper Work?
Per Disney's Park Hopper page (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/guest-services/park-hopper/, read October 9, 2026), with a Park Hopper ticket or a Magic Key pass you must make a theme park reservation and choose your first park. You may then switch parks the same day, subject to the other park's availability, and the second park is not guaranteed. For the two-park approach, see our Park Hopper Strategy Guide.
Loose-item rules and entry-lane options can change, and I do not list their details here. Check Disneyland.com and the Disneyland app before your visit.
